This above all: To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. - Shakespeare
Before you can start creating the life of your dreams you’re going to have to come to the realization that you are 100% responsible for what happens in your life. As we learned in previous lessons your thoughts have produced all the results in your life. Whether you created them purposely by directing your thoughts to your dreams and desires or unconsciously by worrying about or fearing what you did not want to occur, the bottom line is, we all have created everything in our lives. W. Clement Stone, president of the Combined Insurance Company of America and editor of Success Magazine for many years taught his mentees that the principle of 100% responsibility was the first step in achieving their goals. Stone told them that being 100% responsible was “the prerequisite for creating a life of success. It is only by acknowledging that you have created everything up until now that you can take charge of creating the future you want. If you realize that you have created your current conditions, then you can un-create them and recreate them at will.” When you really think about it, being 100% responsible is actually a very liberating as well as empowering thing. It puts you in complete control of your life. The problem is that we’ve been taught to believe that outside forces are responsible for our welfare or lack of it. We’ve been taught to blame others for our misfortune and lack of opportunity. To take full responsibility is a scary thing for many people because then they have no one to blame for their poor results or misfortune. The truth of the matter is that those people have given their power away to others through their belief that they are not in charge of their own lives. They have in essence made an effect their cause (remember the Law of Cause and Effect) and the Law of Attraction is bringing them the precise results they believe in, thereby creating their unfortunate conditions! In reality the entire Ultimate Success Formula that I will teach you is a principle-based pattern for taking full and complete responsibility for your life, success and future! Every exercise I will have you do is geared to help you gain clarity of thinking and generate the power to direct your mind and life on purpose. To do this you must stop blaming anyone (including yourself and your past), stop making excuses or looking for the cause of your failures anywhere other than your own thinking, belief system and mindset. Now, I’m not saying blame your mindset, I’m saying discover the underlying limiting belief, thought or action that is producing the negative result and take responsibility by converting it to the correct belief, thought or action that will produce the result you desire. The key is to realize and accept the fact that you are the one creating your life and results. Your current life is the result of your beliefs, past thoughts and actions. You are the one who controls what goes into your mind from TV, movies and Internet content to books and magazines to the people you associate with. Every thought, every feeling, every action is under your control. You are the only one who has the power to direct your own thinking and your mind 100% of the time. If you relinquish that right it is 100% your responsibility to experience the results of that choice good, bad or indifferent (and it’s usually not good). In my opinion, it’s much easier to take full responsibility and become good at producing positive results than it is to let someone else or external conditions control your life. I know that, for myself, not being in control of my results ruins my chances for success and happiness. Through trial and error and the study of these Principles, I’ve learned that true success is dependent on my taking 100% responsibility. In the next article we will focus on the very important topic of who we believe ourselves to be. Our self-concept is the single most powerful element in our mindset because it determines what we will allow in our lives and sets all boundaries as to what is possible in our present and future. Until then Please leave me your comments and questions below and share this post with everyone you care about. Most people are frustrated with the results they have in life. They are not satisfied where they are and want more but they don’t know how to go about getting it or changing their position in life. It can be a very challenging thing especially since we were not taught how to do it. The bottom line is that it’s not your fault but that still doesn’t make us feel any better because we still are not getting what we want.
If you’re not getting what you want in your life, the question you have to ask is, “How do I break out of that negative (or failure or mediocrity) cycle? How do I escape from that seemingly endless loop?”
You break out of it by becoming aware of what you are thinking. You become conscious of your thoughts and beliefs and the results they are producing in your life. If you are not achieving the results you desire you use that discomfort to make the decision to choose new thoughts and ideals. You become aware that some of your beliefs are not serving you, so you choose to change them. Even though there’s a cycle, once you become aware of it you can take charge of it and take control of your life.
Throughout my business career I’ve applied the success principles I’m sharing with you in my business and personal life and taught the principles to everyone in my marketing organization. What frustrated me was that some people used them immediately to create success, while others seemed to have not heard anything at all. I was determined to find out why and began to study people and what motivated them to think and act the way they did. I soon realized that the level of programming people had when they were very young created a series of beliefs, and these beliefs either empowered or limited them.
As we look at the two phases of our mind it’s important to understand how information passes from one facet to the other and is recorded as “truth”. Between the conscious and the subconscious, there is something called the “critical factor.” The critical factor is the “gatekeeper” between the conscious and the subconscious mind.
The formation of our beliefs lies in the fact that this part of your mind accepts certain information and excludes others. This is one of the keys to understanding how your mind got programmed in the first place.
Most of us have a fully developed critical factor at around six years of age, but until that age we do not have a way to filter out the “truthfulness” of the information presented to us. The subconscious has recorded every feeling and sensation from the moment of conception, including everything your mother felt.
Today you hear a lot of talk about raising your consciousness in order to be more successful or peaceful or happy or joyful, but what does that really mean? What is consciousness anyway? It actually means to be aware of something, to understand it and to know it.
When I first started learning about Universal Law I was unconscious. I had a victim mentality and didn’t realize I was attracting unwanted experiences. As you’ll remember from a previous article what most people don’t understand is that every thing is really two things. It is the thing you desire and the absence or lack of it. In life you get what you think about and believe is yours consistently, not what you want (which implies lack of it). I was misusing the Law of Cause and Effect and suffering the consequences.
