In late 1982 one of my mentors said he felt I was ready to read a very important book. It was Napoleon Hill’s classic, Think and Grow Rich. The first sentence in the book states, “Truly thoughts are things and powerful things at that when mixed with purpose, persistence and a burning desire for their translation into riches or other material objects.”
I remember when I first read that sentence; I was shocked and confused. I thought, “How could something I can’t see or touch be a thing?” I did not realize that energy, although invisible, was a physical thing, or that thought was energy injected with information that would solidify into material objects and conditions as we lived in and acted on the thought. As I continued to read the book, I began to apply its principles, even though I didn’t understand them all and seeming miracles started happening. I started realizing that thoughts were things and they eventually produce their physical equivalent.
The Operating Principle of the Universe, the Law that produces all physical things, is the Law of Cause and Effect, which states that every cause produces an effect and every effect has its cause. This means that everything you see is an effect, which was created by, thought (intelligent energy) which you cannot see and is a cause. Everything in the universe happens according to Law. Chance, luck or coincidence are only names we give to the results produced by Universal Laws that we don’t recognize or understand.
The things most of us strive for in this world are all effects—money, homes, cars, vacations, physical health, recognition, success—are all effects. They are the material expressions of thoughts, concepts and ideas.
As we take this journey together to make 2012 your best year ever, I’d like you to understand that if you’re not where you want to be in your life right now, it’s totally okay. It’s not your fault. Very few of us were taught what I’m sharing with you.
I want you to understand that no one is judging you, except for maybe you, yourself; due to the conditioning you had early in life. Be kind and gentle with yourself and open your mind to the possibilities I’ll teach you. It’s not your fault. You’ve been programmed by many people who were programmed by many other people. They could only teach you the programs they knew.
To avoid unnecessary judgment and condemnation of yourself and others there are three basic premises that you should always keep in mind:
1) Everyone does the best they can at every moment in time according to their level of awareness.
2) You can’t give what you don’t have.
3) You don’t know what you don’t know.
Just remember that all causes are thoughts and ideas. Our persistent thoughts, ideas and beliefs are what produce every physical or material result (effect) in our lives. The predominant thoughts we have (beliefs) always discharge in action and our actions produce our results.
Many people will say, but wait a minute, my circumstances, my family background, the government, the economy, my company and the situations I’m in are producing the results I’m living. People who believe this are giving their power (thought) to their circumstances. In other words, by believing that the effect (your circumstances) is the cause, you are making the effect a cause (a secondary cause), which will in turn produce an effect. Make no mistake about it; it’s your thought that is the power in your life and the real cause of your circumstances.
If you think about how unjust life is or how people are always out to get you—that line of thinking will produce injustice in your life. Things will go against you and people will continually take advantage of you.
If you think life is a struggle and you have to fight for everything you get and sacrifice to succeed, you will struggle, fight and compete in order to get your piece of the pie and make all kinds of sacrifices to succeed.
If you’re always worried about not having enough money or losing your money, that thinking will produce lack and you will always come up short.
If you think you’re unworthy, that you don’t deserve _____(fill in the blank) whether it’s love or wealth or health or happiness, whatever you feel unworthy of or undeserving of will elude you all of your life.
The Law of Correspondence is a Universal Law that states “As above so below, as below so above” which means there is always a correlation between your mindset (what you think and believe, which is cause) and the corresponding material result (effect) produced by it. If you know the Result then you know the Cause.
This means that wealth thinking (cause) produces wealth, riches and abundance (results) while poverty thinking (cause) produces lack, insufficiency and poverty (results). Therefore, if you see a person living in lack you automatically know that they have a lack mentality. If a person produces successful results, they have a success mentality. By the result (effect) you will know the cause (type of thinking or mindset). The bottom line is that our consistent thoughts determine our actions, which cause the corresponding results or effects in our lives.
